European Voices – Let’s Talk JAZZ ist ein Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), das von der Europäischen Union kofinanziert und von der Friedrich Gulda School of Music Wien in Zusammenarbeit mit führenden europäischen Partnerinstitutionen organisiert wird.
Das Programm trägt zur Internationalisierung der musikalischen Hochschulbildung bei, indem es Studierende und Lehrende aus ganz Europa in einer kollaborativen und praxisorientierten Lernumgebung zusammenbringt. Es richtet sich ausschließlich an Vokalistinnen und Vokalisten und legt den Schwerpunkt auf Jazzgesang, mit besonderem Fokus auf Gesangstechnik, stilistische Interpretation, Improvisation und Ensemblearbeit.
European Voices kombiniert eine virtuelle Vorbereitungsphase mit einer intensiven Präsenzwoche in Wien. Die Teilnehmenden arbeiten in internationalen Ensembles, nehmen an Workshops und Masterclasses teil und treten in einen künstlerischen Austausch über unterschiedliche musikalische und kulturelle Hintergründe hinweg.
Neben dem akademischen Programm erhalten die Teilnehmenden auch Einblicke in die lebendige Wiener Musikszene durch kulturelle Aktivitäten wie eine geführte Stadtbesichtigung und einen Besuch eines Jazzclubs.
Den Abschluss des Programms bildet ein öffentliches Abschlusskonzert, das professionell live gestreamt und aufgezeichnet wird. Dadurch sammeln die Teilnehmenden wertvolle Bühnenerfahrung und gewinnen internationale Sichtbarkeit.
Durch die Förderung von künstlerischer Exzellenz, interkulturellem Dialog und europäischer Zusammenarbeit spiegelt das Programm die zentralen Ziele von Erasmus+ wider und stärkt die europäische Dimension in der musikalischen Hochschulbildung.

Das Konzert präsentiert die künstlerischen Ergebnisse des Programms und zeigt internationale Vokalensembles, die während der Woche gemeinsam gearbeitet haben.

Maja Jaku - Professorin für Jazz- und Popgesang (Friedrich Gulda School of Music Wien und JAM MUSIC LAB Privatuniversität)
Geboren in eine Künstlerfamilie in Mitrovica, floh Maja Jaku 1991 nach Österreich. Sie studierte Jazzgesang in Graz bei legendären Musikerpersönlichkeiten wie Mark Murphy und Andy Bey. Seit 2017 ist sie Lehrende an der JAM MUSIC LAB Private University sowie an der Friedrich Gulda School of Music in Wien.
Ihre umfangreiche pädagogische Tätigkeit umfasst außerdem Lehrpositionen an der New England Music Academy (USA) sowie internationale Masterclasses gemeinsam mit Jazzgrößen wie Jon Hendricks und Barry Harris.
Jakus Diskografie spiegelt eine kraftvolle Verbindung von Jazz und Soul wider. Sie begann mit ihrem Debütalbum Talking Jazzik (2002) und setzte sich mit weiteren Veröffentlichungen bei Universal Music fort.
Ihr aktuelles Album Blessed and Bewitched, aufgenommen in New York City mit renommierten Musikern wie Johnathan Blake und Michael Rodriguez, zeigt ihre künstlerische Entwicklung als moderne Jazzinterpretin.
Als regelmäßiger Gast auf internationalen Festivals – von Wien bis Nashville – gilt Maja Jaku heute als eine der markantesten Stimmen der zeitgenössischen Jazz- und Soul-Szene.
Monika Herzig - Artistic Research und Klavier (Friedrich Gulda School of Music/Vizerektorin JAM MUSIC LAB Privatuniversität)
Hier ist eine stilistisch überarbeitete und übersetzte deutsche Version, geeignet für Programmheft, Website oder Festivalbroschüre. Ich habe die Struktur leicht gegliedert, damit sie leichter lesbar ist.
1987 vergab das Pädagogische Institut in Weingarten (Deutschland) ein Stipendium für ein einjähriges Austauschprogramm an der University of Alabama an eine seiner Studentinnen – die Jazzpianistin Monika Herzig. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Partner, dem Gitarristen Peter Kienle, reiste sie im August 1988 mit einem One-Way-Ticket, einem Koffer und einer Gitarre in die USA.
Seitdem hat sie an der Indiana University in Bloomington promoviert (Musikpädagogik und Jazz Studies) und dort über drei Jahrzehnte lang unterrichtet.
Sie ist Autorin mehrerer Bücher, darunter

- Experiencing Chick Corea (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017)
Außerdem ist sie Mitherausgeberin von Jazz and Gender (Routledge, 2022) und war zuvor Herausgeberin der Fachzeitschrift Jazz Education in Research and Practice (IU Press).
Derzeit ist sie Professorin für Artistic Research an der JAM MUSIC LAB Private University in Wien. Zudem moderiert sie die Radiosendung und den Podcast Talking Jazz, die wöchentlich auf WICR und WETF sowie auf Podcast-Plattformen und YouTube ausgestrahlt werden.
Als tourende Jazzkünstlerin trat sie in zahlreichen renommierten Clubs und auf Festivals auf, darunter das Canaris Mas Jazz Festival, Jazz Tales Festival, Women in Jazz Festival, Indy Jazz Fest und das W.C. Handy Festival. Ihre Ensembles tourten durch die USA, Europa und Japan und eröffneten Konzerte für Künstler wie Tower of Power, Sting, Dixie Dregs und Yes.
Unter ihrer Leitung sind mehr als ein Dutzend Alben erschienen – auf ihrem eigenen Label ACME Records sowie bei Owl Studios, Whaling City Sound, Jazz Urbane und Savant.
Zu ihren Auszeichnungen zählen unter anderem

Das Album wurde u. a. in der NPR-Sendung Here and Now vorgestellt, von DownBeat Magazine als eine der besten Veröffentlichungen des Jahres 2018 ausgezeichnet und erreichte Platz 31 der JazzWeek-Jahrescharts.
Ihr aktuelles Album Transparent erreichte eine Top-10-Platzierung in den US-Jazzcharts.
Ágnes Lakatos & Tibor Csuhaj-Barna - Gesang und Kontrabass (Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Budapest)
Ágnes Lakatos zählt zu den bekanntesten ungarischen Jazzsängerinnen. Sie unterrichtet Jazzgesang an der Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest.
Sie war Gast auf zahlreichen Albumproduktionen und veröffentlichte im Jahr 2000 ihr erstes Soloalbum Covered by Frost mit ihrem eigenen Quartett.
Als Sängerin der East Side Jazz Company wirkte sie an zwei Alben mit:

- Fata Morgana (2006)
Gemeinsam mit Tibor Csuhaj-Barna bildet sie außerdem das Duo Voice and Bass, mit dem bislang drei Alben erschienen sind:

Sie ist Artisjus-Preisträgerin und erwarb 2019 einen DLA-Doktortitel. Heute ist sie Associate Professor.
Tibor Csuhaj-Barna ist Professor für Jazz-Kontrabass an der Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest. Außerdem unterrichtet er E-Bass und Kontrabass an der Jazzabteilung der Bartók Béla Secondary School of Music.
Er ist Mitglied mehrerer führender Jazzformationen und hat als Kontrabassist an mehr als 50 Albumproduktionen mitgewirkt – bei acht davon auch als Komponist und Arrangeur.
2018 erwarb er seinen DLA-Doktortitel, und 2024 wurde er zum Associate Professor ernannt.
Voice and Bass
Das Duo Voice and Bass ist eine außergewöhnliche Formation: Die Kombination aus Gesang und Kontrabass stellt hohe musikalische Anforderungen, da zwei reine Intonationsinstrumente – aus den entgegengesetzten Bereichen des musikalischen Spektrums – gemeinsam die gesamte Klangstruktur tragen.
Nur wenige Ensembles weltweit haben sich dieser Besetzung gewidmet und komplette Alben in dieser Form aufgenommen. Die Programme bestehen überwiegend aus Eigenkompositionen, Arrangements und freien Improvisationen.

European Voices - Let’s Talk JAZZ is an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), co-funded by the European Union, and organised by Friedrich Gulda School of Music Wien in cooperation with leading European partner institutions.
The programme contributes to the internationalisation of higher music education by bringing together students and lecturers from across Europe in a collaborative and practice-oriented learning environment. It is designed exclusively for vocalists and focuses on jazz singing, with particular emphasis on vocal technique, stylistic interpretation, improvisation, and ensemble performance.
European Voices combines a virtual preparatory phase with an intensive on-site week in Vienna. Participants work in international ensembles, attend workshops and masterclasses, and engage in artistic exchange across diverse musical and cultural backgrounds.
In addition to the academic programme, participants gain insight into Vienna’s vibrant music scene through cultural activities such as a guided city tour and a visit to a jazz club.
The programme culminates in a public final concert, which is professionally live-streamed and recorded, offering participants valuable stage experience and international visibility.
By fostering artistic excellence, intercultural dialogue, and European cooperation, the programme reflects the core objectives of Erasmus+ and strengthens the European dimension in higher music education.

Maja Jaku (Friedrich Gulda School of Music - (Professor Jazz and Pop Vocals)
Born into an artistic family in Mitrovica, Maja Jaku fled to Austria in 1991, studying jazz vocals in Graz under icons such as Mark Murphy and Andy Bey. Since 2017, she has been a faculty member at JAM MUSIC LAB Private University and the Friedrich Gulda School of Music in Vienna. Her extensive teaching career includes tenures at the New England Music Academy (USA) and masterclasses alongside greats like Jon Hendricks and Barry Harris.
Jaku’s discography reflects a powerful fusion of Jazz and Soul, starting with her debut Talking Jazzik (2002) and continuing through high-profile releases with Universal Music. Her latest album, "Blessed and Bewitched" (recorded in NYC with renowned musicians like Johnathan Blake and Michael Rodriguez), showcases her evolution as a modern jazz stylist. A regular performer at international festivals from Vienna to Nashville, she remains one of the most compelling voices in the contemporary jazz and soul scene.
Monika Herzig - Artistic Research and Piano (Friedrich Gulda School of Music/Vice rector JAM MUSIC LAB Private University)
In 1987, the pedagogical institute in Weingarten, Germany awarded a scholarship for a one-year exchange programme at the University of Alabama to one of their students, jazz pianist Monika Herzig. Together with her partner and guitarist Peter Kienle, she arrived in the States on a one-way ticket, with one suitcase of belongings and one guitar in August 1988.
Since then she has completed her Doctorate in Music Education and Jazz Studies at Indiana University, where she taught for three decades. She is the author of David Baker – A Legacy in Music, published in 2011 by IU Press, Experiencing Chick Corea with Rowman & Littlefield, 2017, co-editor of Jazz and Gender (Routledge, 2022) and the previous editor of Jazz Education in Research and Practice (IU Press). Currently she is Professor of Artistic Research at the Jam Music Lab Private University, Vienna. She is the host of Talking Jazz, a radio programme/ podcast broadcast weekly on WICR and WETF, as well as on podcast services and youtube.
As a touring jazz artist, she has performed at many prestigious jazz clubs and festivals, such as the Canaris Mas Jazz Festival, Jazz Tales Festival, Women in Jazz Festival, Indy Jazz Fest, , the W.C.Handy Festival, to name just a few. Groups under her leadership have toured the US, Europe, and Japan, opened for acts such as Tower of Power, Sting, the Dixie Dregs, Yes, and more. She has released more than a dozen CDs under her leadership on her own ACME Records as well as Owl Studios, Whaling City Sound, Jazz Urbane, and Savant. Her awards include a 1994 Down Beat Magazine Award for Best Original Song, a Jazz Journalist Association Hero 2015 award, as well as grants from the NEA, the Indiana Arts Commission, MEIEA, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, Chamber Music America, Indiana University, among others. Her project “SHEROES” (Whaling City Sound, Savant) features the world’s leading female jazz instrumentalists including Leni Stern, Jamie Baum, Jennifer Vincent, Rosa Avila, Mayra Casales, Reut Regev, Ada Rovatti, and Ingrid Jensen and was featured on NPR’s Here and Now as well as cited as one of the best releases of 2018 in DownBeat Magazine, placing #31 on the year-end Jazz Week Charts. Ágnes Lakatos & Tibor Csuhaj-Barna - Vocals and double-bass (LFranz iszt Academy, Budapest)
Ágnes Lakatos is one of the most well-known Hungarian jazz singers, a jazz singing teacher at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, she has appeared as a guest on numerous albums, and her first solo album, “Covered by frost,” was released with her own quartet in 2000As a singer with the East Side Jazz Company, she has appeared on two albums (2003- Bora; 2006- Fata Morgana) and as a member of the vocal-bass duo “Voice and Bass” on three albums (2008- Voice and Bass, 2013- Into the Groove, 2021- Black Crow). Artisjus Award winner. In 2019, she earned a DLA doctorate, and is an associate professor.
Tibor Csuhaj-Barna is a professor of jazz double bass at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, and teaches bass guitar and double bass at the Jazz Department of the Bartók Béla Secondary School of Music. He is a member of several leading bands. He has contributed to more than 50 albums as a double bass player, 8 of which he is also the composer and arranger. In 2018, he earned a DLA doctoral degree, and in 2024 he became an associate professor.
Playing a voice-bass duo is a great challenge for musicians, as it requires extraordinary familiarity and technical knowledge, since two intonation instruments - from two ends of the musical spectrum - create the music. Only a few pairs in the world have undertaken to record complete albums in this lineup. The albums are mostly composed of their own compositions, as well as arrangements and free improvisations. Their albums Voice and Bass (2008), Into the Groove (2013) and Black Crow (2021) are real rarities in the world of jazz.
The duo has successfully performed at numerous European festivals and has performed several times in Israel and the USA.
